CHAPTER FOURTEEN
LUKE WAS IN a corner booth at the Long Horn. He stared into his coffee, trying to think of anything but Hope. He knew exactly when she left for Montereyâat least he had to assume that was where she went each monthâand when she returned. He knew her daily routine probably as well as she did. Not that he actually kept tabs on her. But it was a small town. The development site was adjacent to his property, and her house was on his way to...well, on the way when he decided to go for a drive. Or a ride.
Whenever her Jeep wasnât at either location or at the architectâs local office, and the architect was walking her dog, he knew sheâd driven to the airport in Austin. Heâd see her vehicle again in two or three days.
He considered everything heâd learned about her partner in Monterey. If she and Drake were so crazy about each other that they couldnât bear to be apart for more than four or five weeks, why didnât he move here with her or at least come and visit? Why was she always the one doing the traveling?
And why did that concern him? Was he so messed up that he couldnât stand the thought of her being away for a few days? Not that he saw her when she was here. She kept mostly to herself.
What he did know was that other than those regular few days she spent in Monterey, she never seemed to stop. From what heâd seen and heard, the woman had limitless energy. She was applying herself to this project of hers nonstop. He wasnât aware of her having taken a day off, weekends included, and she didnât participate in any of the community social activities. He knew, because he had been attending most of them. If that was completely out of character for him, so what? He had a right to socialize now and again, didnât he? Heâd gone from trying to make sure he didnât bump into her, to dropping in at event after event just in case she was there. And that was senseless. She was in a relationship, and that meant she was off-limits. Still, he had to admire her determination. She worked diligently, prevailing over every hardship that presented itself to make her fatherâs wishes come true.
But he couldnât believe sheâd gone soft on her father. Hope had reason enough not to defend her father because of the way heâd treated her and her mother, but knowing about the circumstances of his own fatherâs death, how could she not be sympathetic to his feelings? Heâd certainly told her all about it in those long and painful letters, those anguished emails.
Luke slouched forward and held his cup in both hands. He nearly jumped when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He cast angry eyes up into his brotherâs dancing ones.
âI guess now I know what people mean when they say âif looks could
